Martin Ridgwell has been making paper-cuts for over 15 years, and has been exhibiting and selling them across the country and in New York. His paper cuts are clearly related to the Swiss and German 16th century art form known as Scherenschnitte ( German for scissor cuts ). His intricate, delicate cut-outs often involve young men and women and very often also include wild animals, wolves in particular. There is something with in them that reminds one of the short stories of the Edwardian writer Saki. They both share a sense of humour but a slightly sinister edge is always hovering in the background.
Ridgwell creates the image using a surgical blade, he considers the blade as being the same as a pencil. The black paper is Daler Rowney 150g acid free.
